Application Information

The Department of Dermatology offers a total of 9 residency positions. There are three first year residents selected each year. Applicants must have at least one year of postgraduate training. The Duke Dermatology program does not provide any medicine or pediatric training and this must be arranged by the candidate independently.

A North Carolina Residents Training license is required for Dermatology residents and the department will work with the House Staff Office to obtain this license from the North Carolina Board of Medical Examiners. This will be taken care of after the contract is signed for acceptance into the program.

All applicants to Duke University Hospital sponsored graduate medical educations programs must document passing scores in the first two parts of appropriate medical licensure examinations (USMLE, COMLEX, or equivalent Canadian examinations, etc.) to be eligible for entry into any program. This policy applies to all graduate medical trainees whether United States or International Medical School graduates.

Candidates should file their applications, medical school letters, 500-1000 word autobiography, and three letters of recommendation at least 20 months prior to their intended starting date. Applications received after December 1 of any given application cycle will not be considered.

Duke participates in the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Credentials are reviewed and a number of candidates will be invited to visit Duke for a personal interview approximately eighteen months before their intended starting date.

Duke is a member of the National Resident Matching program in Dermatology and will abide by the rules of the match. Applicants should apply to this program and obtain a match number.
